Individual Psychotherapy

Finding the right therapist and starting therapy can feel like a massive step. I want to acknowledge your decision to do something worthwhile for you. I believe that everyone could benefit from therapy, where giving yourself time to focus on you and your wellbeing can be a powerful and life-changing experience. Getting to know ourselves, our processes and ways of being, in the busyness of life can help bring understanding, greater resource when times are challenging and help us move towards fulfilling our potentials.

Psychotherapy can help with emotional or mental health problems including anxiety, feeling like you can’t cope, problems dealing with stress or recovering from stressful situations, lack of confidence, coping with the effects of abuse, feelings of depression, sadness, grief or emptiness, difficulty making or sustaining relationships, or repeatedly becoming involved in unsatisfying or destructive relationships, and difficulties coming to terms with losses such as bereavement, divorce or unemployment, amongst other aspects of life experience.

Psychotherapy recognises the lasting impact of trauma and stressful experiences, making you feel unsafe or vulnerable. In sessions we can work together to explore what has happened to you, not what is wrong with you. My focus is on compassion, listening and understanding, whilst providing a non-judgemental, honest and empathic space to explore, challenge, celebrate, and value your unique experiences.

I am a naturally creatively curious individual, and during sessions I can bring this part of me to support you to express and process your feelings, gain deeper insight into any issues, and confidentially talk about things you may not feel able to discuss anywhere else. We can work together to find better ways to cope with life, heal from trauma, and improve relationships, including the one with yourself.

I am a registered member of the BACP, adhering to their ethical framework for professional practice and maintain a high level of ongoing professional development to ensure my skills and knowledge are up to date. The areas I currently work with or have previously worked with are:

Alongside the areas above, I also have a keen interest in supporting those navigating the intricacies of purity culture, religious trauma, and the journey of deconstruction from high-demand religion. I understand the impact of societal expectations surrounding purity culture and provide a supportive space for individuals to navigate and explore their beliefs. Together, we can address any challenges you may face in relation to identity, sex and sexual orientation, relationships, and self-worth, intentionally striving to embody new beliefs that fit with your authentic self.

Religious trauma is a complex trauma impacting many aspects of your life. If you've experienced religious trauma, I offer a compassionate space for you to process the emotional aftermath. We will work together to explore your relationship with spirituality, with or without religion, helping you reclaim a sense of autonomy and find peace in whatever direction you want your life to take and the values you wish to hold dear. Embodying the belief that you are inherently good after high-demand religion can feel like an act of rebellion and bring many feelings including shame, confusion, and frustration. We can navigate these feelings together. Embarking on the journey of deconstruction can be both liberating and excruciatingly challenging. I am here to support you as you question, explore, and deconstruct your beliefs, joining you in the process with empathy and understanding. It’s not necessarily about reconstructing, but helping you find a way back to your true self without the constructs of others.

First session

I understand that finding the right therapist is very important and the process of therapy requires courage and commitment. Please feel free to reach out for a confidential consultation. Beginning therapy can feel daunting and it’s important to find the right therapist for you, therefore I offer a free, initial 20-minute phone call or online meeting. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have about how I work and what to expect from our sessions. There's no such thing as a silly question.

Offering

I work with adults clients on a one-to-one basis. Some clients I work with come to explore a very specific, current concern which we may be able to address in 6-12 sessions. Alternatively, you may wish to explore more deeply-rooted difficulties which will require longer-term work over a period of months or years. I work on an open-ended basis which means that together, we will regularly look at how you are progressing in sessions and agree when you feel ready to bring your therapy to an end.

Sessions last for 50 minutes and therapy works best on a weekly basis, at a regular time. However, I recognise this isn’t possible for everyone and will strive to be flexible so that we can find a time that works best for both of our schedules. I offer face-to-face sessions from my private room near Arundel. There is off-street parking and toilet facilities are available. I also work remotely, offering sessions via video or telephone.

Current fees are £55 per 50 minute session.

Hopefully from reading a little more about me you can get an idea of who I am and the ways I work. I welcome contact from you so that we can explore whether I am the right therapist for you. I feel honoured to work with those that allow me to join them on their journey. I look forward to hearing from you.

"Lydia was absolutely brilliant. So kind, caring and I could really speak to her, opening up without any judgment. My sessions were helpful to help me to unpick my grief and allowed me to share and validate my experience too."
